Starting Ukulele From Scratch
by Alisha Diaz
One Cyber Monday I was just itching to buy something on Amazon. I had been wanting a ukulele for some time, so I decided to check them out. I was amazed how affordable they were. I actually did not buy one that was on sale. I bought (almost) everything for my ukulele on Amazon, just like any Amazon addict would. Ha ha.. I was very impressed with what I bought. I know others that have purchased terrible ukuleles from assorted websites, and I want you to save the trouble and learn from their experience. I will explain what I got, why I like it, and I will post the direct links so you may check it out as well.
I love love love my ukulele! I'm so glad I got the brand that I did. My friend, who is a great musician, was actually very impressed with the quality. When I bought it, it was $40. I believe they are being sold for a little bit less than that now. The quality is great, and it came with amazing strings. I've had my ukulele for about 3 years now, and I am still happy with them. That says a lot, because instruments usually come with "crappy" strings. The strings are durable and aren't hard to press. I learned 5 songs in the next couple weeks with youtube. The brand is Hola!, and the link is attached below.
For the first month, it was hard for me to strum on the ukulele. That seems to be common with beginners. I got some felt ukulele picks, and they really nice. They helped me practice until I was able to start using my fingers to strum. I gave one to a friend of mine, who was learning ukulele, and it really helped him out as well. They are very affordable, so if they aren't for you, it will not be an expensive loss.
Now, I have mixed feelings about the ukulele tuner I got. The first time I got the Snark Ukulele Tuner, it worked well and I was very pleased with it. After much use, the batteries died. That is normal and how life goes. For Christmas, my husband got me a new one, and I broke it the first time I used it. I tried to adjust it, and the top popped off. It should have been able to pop back on, but the prong that held it on broke. I was so surprised since my first one lasted for a long time without any difficulties. I'm sure we could contact Amazon get a new one, and we will probably do that. Either way, I will still post it below that way you can see if you'd like to give it a try.
I would suggest keeping your ukulele in a bag when it is not in use. Hola! has different deals at different times, and sometimes the instrument comes with a case. My didn't so I got one on eBay.... It was horrible. Then I purchased the ChromaCast one from Amazon, and it is so much better. It is a soft case, and it works great for me. If you plan on traveling with your ukulele a lot, I would suggest investing in a hard shell case.
Starting ukulele was a great experience for me, and I was very pleased with the quality of what I bought on Amazon. The links of what I bought are posted below, and I highly recommend checking them out. Feel free to comment any questions, and I will try to get back to you in a timely manner. Good luck on starting this new instrument!
